. A couple who met in school, Tau and Manu were friends, lovers and eventually married. That all changed after Manu's wedding to an American woman. Now, Manu wants a divorce, which, surprisingly, makes Tau happy. He's currently busy trying to find a job and a place to stay. Manu, however, is at it again, though this time he's found a local South Indian girl with whom he plans to re-ignite his fiery romance.
Maldives may be the most unlikely of locations for a Hollywood movie production to pick but Ben Stiller thinks the series potential is enormous.
Ben Stiller, who produced and stars in ‘Tanu Weds Manu Returns’, says the film will pave the way for the expansion of Indian cinema.
Stiller shot the film in the Maldives, the palm-fringed holiday paradise popular with rich Europeans. He says he chose the location “because of the past, and because we wanted to shoot in a place we knew we could come back to.”
With a huge cast and crew, including Hollywood stars including Uma Thurman and Ranveer Singh, the eight-day shoot took place over two months in a remote location that lends itself to a cinematic experience.
“We did not want to shoot it in Mumbai or in a studio,” he says. “We wanted to bring the audience into the Indian experience. We really wanted to create a feeling of being in India, a feeling of being in a place where the food looks Indian.”
First aired last year, the six-part ‘Tanu Weds Manu Returns’ tells the story of two Indian and British-Maldivian students and friends, Tantya (Stiller) and Manu (Ranveer), who married in India.
The second of Stiller’s children, Manu falls in love with Sanjana, a Sri Lankan woman he meets in Goa. He returns home to a country ruled by his domineering, sex-obsessed father, with whom he is not on good terms.
“We thought a lot about the intimacy of the marriage,” says Stiller. “He is almost a step-brother. I wanted a big bang of emotion. If you look at the ‘Seven Brides’ [sequel] you can see the transition from the tension of marriage to the intimacy of marriage, which is beautiful.”
Stiller says the Indian middle class that went to the premiere with his wife Uma Thurman – the first time he has seen the film – “nodded off”. It was far too racy for their taste. “It’s like you are in an Indian ‘Sex and the City’.” 0b46394aab
