Natsamrat: A Tragic Tale of a Veteran Theatre Actor
Natsamrat is a 2016 Marathi drama film directed by Mahesh Manjrekar and starring Nana Patekar as Ganpat Ramchandra Belwalkar, a retired theatre actor who faces the hardships of old age and neglect from his children. The film is based on a play of the same name by V.V. Shirwadkar, which itself was inspired by William Shakespeare's King Lear. Natsamrat was released on 1 January 2016, coinciding with Patekar's 65th birthday, and received critical acclaim and commercial success.
The film follows the life of Ganpat Belwalkar, who was once a celebrated actor of Marathi theatre, known for his roles in various Shakespearean plays. After retiring from the stage, he lives happily with his wife Kaveri (Medha Manjrekar) in their Mumbai apartment. However, their peace is shattered when their son Makrand (Ajit Parab) and daughter Vidya (Mrunmayee Deshpande) demand their share of the property and force them to leave their home. Ganpat and Kaveri move in with their daughter Neha (Neha Pendse) and her husband Mr. Barve (Sunil Barve), but soon realize that they are not welcome there either. They face humiliation and abuse from their son-in-law, who considers them a burden. Ganpat decides to leave with his wife and live on the streets, where they meet their old friend Rambhau (Vikram Gokhale), another former theatre actor who has fallen on hard times.
Ganpat tries to cope with his situation by reciting his famous dialogues from his plays, but his sanity begins to deteriorate as he witnesses the cruelty and indifference of the society around him. He also suffers from the loss of his wife, who dies of a heart attack, and his friend Rambhau, who commits suicide after being diagnosed with cancer. Ganpat is left alone and broken, wandering aimlessly in search of a place to belong. He finally finds some solace in a tea stall owner (Nilesh Divekar), who recognizes him as Natsamrat (the king of actors) and offers him a place to stay. However, Ganpat's fate takes one final tragic turn when he is killed by a drunkard (Sandeep Pathak), who mistakes him for a beggar and stabs him for money.
Natsamrat is a powerful and poignant film that explores the themes of aging, family, betrayal, dignity, and art. It showcases the brilliant performance of Nana Patekar, who delivers one of his finest roles in his career. He brings out the emotions and nuances of Ganpat's character with remarkable skill and intensity. He is supported by a strong cast of actors, who portray their roles with conviction and realism. The film also features some memorable dialogues and scenes from Shakespeare's plays, such as Hamlet, Macbeth, Othello, and Julius Caesar, which add to the depth and richness of the story. The film also has a beautiful soundtrack composed by Ajit Parab, with lyrics by Guru Thakur.
Natsamrat is a film that deserves to be watched by anyone who appreciates good cinema and great acting. It is a film that will make you laugh, cry, and think about the meaning of life and art. It is a film that will stay with you long after it ends. aa16f39245
