Around midnight on September 12, 1997, John Ho received a phone call from a man identified as Mr. Cheng. Cheng said that he was a colleague of Press and was the president of an L.A.-based corporation that would donate $1,000,000 to help Hong Kong '97 defray its costs. He asked Ho if the educational game could be developed in Hong Kong. Ho gave him a list of the features to be hit, and he placed the order for the game. Cheng made two more donations after that. We released the game on "Monte Vista Street" (a fictional street) of Hong Kong in October 1997. When we received Cheng's donations, since he lived in Los Angeles, we had to address them to the American company. This resulted in a series of bogus receipts. We sent the bogus receipts to Cheng and asked him to write a letter on the back to maintain anonymity. Cheng said he would.
After the game was released, Ho met Cheng in Hong Kong. He showed Cheng a sample of the trailers he had made on CD-R & that Cheng liked. Cheng said he and some of his friends had decided to donate $500,000 to the game. Ho asked Cheng where he lived. Cheng said Los Angeles. Ho took a photo of Cheng and later sent it to Press, who never replied.
In early October, Ho had approved the trailers of Hong Kong '97. Thus Ho was disappointed when a certain portion of the trailers was not included in the game's final product. So Ho asked Cheng to re-release the trailers to the public. Cheng promised to make it happen. Ho and Cheng arranged for a meeting between the two in mid-October. Ho paid Cheng for the trailer re-release.
Ho received a 'thank-you' letter dated October 13, 1997, and a burning-car poster that was a rip-off of the Hong Kong 97 watermark logo. Press called Ho at midnight and said he had received the posters. d2c66b5586
