Development of a crossover between the three series and Supergirl began in May 2016, when it was learned that Supergirl would move to The CW from CBS for its second season. By the following September the scripts for each episode were written, and were filmed in October 2016. The premise and episode titles were also announced in September. In \"Invasion!\", the main cast members of each series appear in (at least) their own series; Melissa Benoist appears as Supergirl in the entire crossover. A number of actors and characters from previous Arrow seasons returned to reprise their roles, since Arrow's episode doubled as its 100th.
In November 2016, Kreisberg said that the Dominators would appear during the later part of Supergirl's season after the crossover event.[21] Guggenheim said that in the initial script for The Flash, Lynda Carter appeared as the Vice President (becoming President after his death in the episode); Carter appears as President Olivia Marsdin on Supergirl. This did not occur because a note from the studio felt it would have been too confusing, having Marsdin appear as president on one series (and another Earth) and vice president on the others. Guggenheim added, \"In the midst of time travel and aliens, it was just one sci-fi problem too much\" and conceded that \"if people at the studio were confused by the script, it was probably not particularly friendly to casual fans.\"[22]
The three episodes were filmed from September 23 to October 12, 2016.[23][24] They were filmed concurrently, with some cast members shooting scenes for several series each day. Filming was done at the Boundary Bay Airport.[27] The Flash's episode was directed by Dermott Downs,[28][25] Arrow's by James Bamford,[23] and Legend of Tomorrow's by Gregory Smith.[24]
The episodes, the rest of Legends of Tomorrow's second season, The Flash's third season and Arrow's fifth season were released separately on Blu-ray and DVD in Region 1 on August 15, 2017,[35] September 5[36] and September 19, respectively.[37] The three episodes, accompanied by three \"Allied: The Invasion Complex\" behind-the-scenes featurettes (included separately in each series' home media release), were released together on a separate DVD on August 17, 2017 in Region 2[38] and September 20 in Region 4.[39] The episodes are available for streaming on Netflix and The CW app in the United States.[40][41]
Jesse Schedeen of IGN gave The Flash episode an 8.4 out of 10, noting the appeal of seeing many of the Arrowverse characters joining forces. He was critical of the Dominators, feeling they were not \"well-defined... to unify these heroes\", resulting in the Flashpoint-related character drama to propel the first act. Schedeen continued, \"Everyone had their moment to shine, even more minor players like Felicity and Thea. But if there was one subplot that felt unnecessary and out of place, it was Wally's\", calling it \"forced\". Schedeen appreciated the focus on the fallout from Flashpoint, calling it \"one of the biggest flaws of Season 3 so far\" on The Flash, and hoped that more of the Dominators' comic backstory would appear in the crossover's other two episodes.[55] The A.V. Club's Scott Von Doviak gave the episode a B+, calling the episode an \"absurdly overstuff kickoff\" to \"Invasion!\" He enjoyed that the episode \"continues to advance the story arcs of this season of The Flash and finds a way to weave those ongoing conflicts into the multi-series story of an alien invasion.\" Von Doviak questioned some of the episode's events, such as Barry's knowledge of the Legends adventures and his not caring about secret identities, and said that viewers \"who don't necessarily follow the other three shows religiously are at a disadvantage\".[56]
A crossover between the two series was announced in January 2015 by The CW President Mark Pedowitz, who stated the network's intention to have an Arrowverse crossover every season following the success of the previous year's crossover \"Flash vs. Arrow\". By September, the scripts for each episode had been written, with filming occurring shortly before the end of the month and into October 2015. The crossover sees every main cast member of each series who appear at least in their own series, with additional actors and characters also reprising their Arrowverse roles.
The episodes received generally positive reviews; however, the Legends setup received mixed responses. Both series experienced season high viewership despite the ratings being down from the previous year's crossover. A subsequent crossover occurred the following year, titled \"Invasion!\".[1][2]
In January 2015, The CW President Mark Pedowitz stated the network's intention to have an Arrowverse crossover every season,[11] after the previous year's two-part event with the eighth episodes of the third season of Arrow and the first season of The Flash, titled \"Flash vs. Arrow\".[12] In July 2015, Andrew Kreisberg, creator and executive producer on both series, confirmed that the eighth episodes of the fourth season of Arrow and the second season of The Flash would be a two-part crossover.[13] The next month, Kreisberg revealed that the crossover would help lay the groundwork for the new team-up, spin-off series Legends of Tomorrow. Kreisberg said, \"Both Arrow and Flash are helping to set those things up, in both big ways and small ways, which is lovely... There's going to be a lot happening leading up to the crossover, which is serving as a [sort-of] pilot for Legends.\"[14]
Filming of the two episodes occurred from September 25, 2015, until October 15, 2015.[19][20] The Flash's episode was directed by Ralph Hemecker,[18] and Arrow's by Thor Freudenthal.[19] Berlanti discussed the logistic nightmare of bringing the three series together since the first couple of episodes of Legends of Tomorrow had already been shot before the filming of the crossover episodes. In addition, there were characters from The Flash and Arrow \"that we were also shooting out of those respective shows before we went into shooting Legends to then have to come back and do the introduction of some of the characters here.\"[21] Falk Hentschel described the filming as \"an acting marathon\" constantly moving from one set to another during the day, but had a blast.[22]
The episodes were released together on Blu-ray and DVD, along with the rest of The Flash's second season on September 6, 2016, and Arrow's fourth season on August 30, 2016. Bonus features include behind-the-scenes featurettes, audio commentary, deleted scenes, and a blooper reel.[27][28]
Giving the episode a 7.5 out of 10, Eric Walters of Paste stated, that \"Unlike last year, \"Legends of Today\" did not feel like a Flash episode featuring Team Arrow.\" He expected the 2015 crossover would be bigger than previous years' noting: \"It is, but it's also far from complete.\" He felt that \"Legends of Today\" was not so much a The Flash episode, but more like \"the first half of something much larger\". In the end, he wished \"the show had embraced it fully\".[43] Den of Geek's Mike Cecchini gave the episode 3.5 stars out of 5, saying: \"I'm really kind of amazed at just how much work \"Legends of Today\" gets done without just becoming a massive mess.\" He described it as \"a proper two-parter this year\" and concluded: \"Amidst all the Legends of Tomorrow hooplah and the fun of getting the teams together, \"Legends of Today\" still manages to move the main Flash season 2 storyline forward in a couple of neat ways.\"[44]
Jesse Schedeen gave Arrow's episode an 8.7 out of 10, noting that the Flash episode was \"saddled with the setup\" while \"Arrow gets to have fun with the payoff.\" He felt the pace and storyline issues in \"Legends of Tomorrow,\" the Flash episode, were resolved satisfactorily. The inclusion of flashbacks and time travel gave it \"a larger scope and an added sense of drama\". As well, the Ollie subplot allowed Stephen Amell \"to show a much different and more vulnerable side to his character\".[46] Alisdair Wilkins awarded the episode a B+ noting \"how much better the show's entire dynamic is this season compared with last year\". He added that \"Legends Of Yesterday\" shows Oliver's conflict between keeping his friends safe and recognizing he cannot be victorious without them.[37]
The crossover between Arrow and The Flash was officially the very first of the Arrowverse and laid the groundwork for future crossovers. Every future season of Arrow and The Flash would have a crossover episode in the eighth or ninth episode of the season.
As Supergirl remained relatively separate from the rest of the Arrowverse, for the most part, in season one, you can get away with watching the majority of the series without worrying about continuity. Make sure to look out for episode 18 for when The Flash makes an appearance.
Long before Marvel moved onto the small screen with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., DC's own CW series Arrow had already found itself a fan following. Now two episodes into its second season, Arrow shows no signs of slowing. Instead, the sophomore series is in the process of maturing its characters and storylines while folding in more characters from the DC universe. For the uninitiated, Arrow stars Stephen Amell as Oliver Queen/Arrow, a young billionaire who survives a shipwreck and spends the following five years on a dangerous island, only to return to Starling City to seek vengeance against wrong-doers as a hooded vigilante. Amell and his character have come a long way since Arrow's premiere, and season two of the series is reflecting that fact nicely. Hit the jump for my review of tonight's episode, \"Identity\".
In the season premiere, mysterious invaders of the island put Shado (Celina Jade) in harm's way and Queen reacts by bludgeoning one of the men to death. In this episode, Shado helps him deal with his guilt over the murder with a little lakeside love-making session. Slade (Manu Bennett) later warns Queen not to fall too hard for her since that will only make his time on the island more difficult. The trio then finds a hideout full of disfigured skeletons of Japanese imperial soldiers, there since World War II. Oliver finds a stone arrowhead with Japanese kanji on it. 153554b96e
