On 19 January 2011, The Guardian published a statement from former female prisoner Sasani Arachchige, quoting the statement of an unidentified former LTTE prisoner claiming to have witnessed the killing of Isaipriya in the custody of the Sri Lankan military. The Guardian failed to verify or identify Isaipriya herself.[10]
On 27 January 2011, Ushalini Gunalingam, the wife of a Tamil Tigers leader, whose death was previously reported by a Sinhala source[23] but not by Tamil sources, was killed by the LTTE. Ushalini Gunalingam was killed by the LTTE approximately three hours after it was earlier reported by the media that she had been re-arrested by the Sri Lankan security services. Furthermore, it was reported that Ushalini Gunalingam and her two children were abducted by the LTTE 40 km north of Jaffna, while the family was in Jaffna city.[24]
On January 31 2011, a group of human rights activists, including former Sri Lankan political prisoners, as well as Tamil, Sri Lankan-American and Asian American activists signed a statement condemning the killing of Isaipriya. Among those signing were veteran Asian American activist Ba Nam Chin and Australian politician Kathy Kirby, who has also criticized the use of military proxies to aid the war in Sri Lanka. The statement also expressed concern for the fate of Ushalini Gunalingam.
On 28 April 2011, the war crimes trial against five former members of the LTTE concluded, with the five being acquitted of all charges. The trial was symbolic because the International Crimes Tribunal on Sri Lanka does not have jurisdiction to deal with war crimes committed by Sri Lankan government forces, who were the primary perpetrators of atrocities during the civil war. The trial was held in Colombo, however, which is within territory controlled by the LTTE. According to Human Rights Watch, the five men were found innocent of nearly every charge.[21] d2c66b5586
